WWII – Korean War US Army African American Officer group to Major William E. Porter of Kentucky, Ohio, and Indiana. In WWII he served as a Platoon Leader in Co. B, 366th Infantry Regiment, 92nd Infantry Division and in Korea was Company Commander of Co. L, 3rd Battalion, 9th Infantry Regiment, 2nd Infantry Division until wounded in September 1950. He would serve in various roles from Military Police to Training Officer to a mission to Liberia in the 50s, to various Reserve Officer positions through 1970. In WWII, he was awarded the Silver Star for gallantry in action, after he exposed himself to enemy arms while his company advanced on its objective under a hail of machine-gun fire. With his unit pinned to the ground, Lieutenant Porter succeeded in eliminating the machine-gun nest, killing the German officer in command and forcing the gun crew to surrender. Medals include his numbered Silver Star, numbered Purple Heart, Bronze Star campaign medals (including Navy issue ring suspension American Defense Medal), misc. insignia and pins, unit patches including a First Army Infantry insert patch, a theater made second award Combat Infantry Badge (one pin missing). The group includes paperwork including his Domain of the Golden Dragon Certificate from 1951, photos of him with other Officers, special orders book from 1950, and a nice photo of him in uniform seated next to an African-American Major General. The display case does not come with this group.
