Description

Lot of personal items from General Jacob Edward Smart (1909–2006) who was a United States Air Force four-star general whose career spanned from World War II through the Cold War. A South Carolina native and 1931 West Point graduate, he served as a bomber pilot and planner, most notably credited with devising the strategy for the daring 1943 low-level raid on Ploieti’s oil refineries in Romania. During the war he flew combat missions in Europe and later in the Pacific, surviving being shot down over Japan and enduring as a prisoner of war. After the war, Smart rose through senior leadership positions, including commander of the Military Airlift Command and deputy commander of U.S. European Command, before retiring in 1966. His distinguished service earned him numerous decorations, including the Distinguished Service Cross, DSM, Silver Star, and Distinguished Flying Cross. One photo is a copy with a signature but the large one is original.
