Lot 171:
Description
USN Navy Submarine Force Pacific Fleet Mighty Mine Dodgers Certificate. This is a beautifully colored WWII Era certificate. The Mighty Mine Dodgers Certificate was issued by Vice Admiral Charles A. Lockwood (Commander, Submarines, Pacific – ComSubPac) to the crew members of the 9 Submarines that converged on the Tsushima Straits at the southern tip of Japan (Operation Barney) on June 4, 5, and 6, 1945. The nine submarines that entered the Sea of Japan through deadly mine fields were: the Bonefish, the Bowfin (SS 287), the Crevalle (SS 291), the Flying Fish (SS 229), the Sea Dog (SS 401), the Skate (SS 305), the Spadefish (SS 411), the Tinosa (SS 283), and the Tunny (SS 282). The Bonefish did not return. The purpose of this trip was to enter The Sea of Japan and destroy the remaining supply lines for vital supplies and to demoralize the Japanese people. The 9 submarines taking part in Operation Barney sunk 31 ships and 16 small craft for a total of 108,230 tons. Approximate size is 14 x 9.75 inches. Unfortunately, the owner of this certificate had it affixed to a sticky scrapbook page. The certificate is still partially attached to that page and is being auctioned AS IS. The front of the certificate is in great condition.
