Description
48 star flag measuring approximately 32 x 55 inches with attributions to the USS Archerfish submarine. There is no particular history of this piece and is possibly from a sailor of the sub or a reunion type piece. The USS Archerfish (SS-311) was a U.S. Navy submarine best known for one of the most remarkable single attacks of World War II. Commissioned in 1943, Archerfish conducted several patrols in the Pacific, primarily targeting Japanese shipping. Its most famous mission came in November 1944 when it encountered the Japanese aircraft carrier Shinano, which was the largest aircraft carrier in the world at the time. Despite being heavily escorted, Archerfish tracked Shinano for hours and fired a spread of torpedoes. Multiple hits caused catastrophic flooding, and Shinano sank the next day, making it the largest warship ever sunk by a submarine. Archerfish continued service through the end of the war, earning several battle stars. After WWII, it remained in the Navy in various roles before being decommissioned in 1968.
