In Korea, he led the 7th Cavalry Regiment and later commanded the 1st Cavalry Division. As Commanding General of the Continental Army Command (1967–1970), he oversaw all active and reserve forces in the United States. Beyond combat, he contributed to historic moments such as the Pacifics first atomic tests at Eniwetok. Known as Gentleman Jim, he was awarded numerous honors, including two Distinguished Service Medals, the Silver Star, the Bronze Star (2), and the Purple Heart.
