Ensign Craig Spowers graduated from the US Naval Academy in February 1941. He was Killed In Action on the night of October 30-31, 1941 when destroyer ship USS Reuben James was torpedoed and sunk by German submarine U-552 near Iceland. You will receive the following: 1941 letter from Frank Knox (Secretary of the Navy), newspaper clippings, 1941 signed letter from Edward C. Forsyth who later became Rear Admiral in 1942, 1942 signed letter from Mary T. Norton (House of Representatives & first woman elected to Congress) and a USS Reuben James First Day Cover Envelope. We are not sure what this envelope has to do with Ensign Craig Spowers, unless the family had it knowing he was aboard this ship. Overall, good condition for its age.
