Description

NAMED Vietnam POW Died in Captivity Air Force Cross to Lt. Duane W. Martin (portrayed by Steve Zahn in the 2007 movie Rescue Dawn). In 1965, He was the co-pilot of Dutchy 41, a rescue helicopter on a SAR mission that was shot down by ground fire, and he was captured and taken to Laos. In 1966, he, along with Lt. Dieter Dengeler, escaped from their POW camp and evaded capture for 17 days before he was killed by a machete wielding villager. The medal is an early HLP Strike, and the engraving has largely been scratched off. What is visible is a portion of the name Duane and the top of the letter W. Of the 198 AFC recipients, only one Duane W. was awarded one, that being the aforementioned Officer.
