Description
Vietnam Issued WWII Navy Style Named Distinguished Flying Cross DFC Medal. Named and engraved to Army WO4 Robert J. Filipowski. Filipowski served in Korea and Vietnam. This medal with two oak leaf clusters comes with its ribbon and lapel pin. From information found on the internet: Filipowski earned three Distinguished Flying Crosses. He also received a Purple Heart. Filipowski flew a Huey gun ship. During an extraction as ground fire opened up. He flew between the rescue helicopter and the ground fire so that his machine gunner could provide some cover. Accounts mention a bullet went through his face in that encounter. He spent some time in Hong Kong for surgery and recovery, and went back to Vietnam. His citation reads, The President of the United States of America, authorized by Act of Congress, July 2, 1926, takes pleasure in presenting a Second Bronze Oak Leaf Cluster in lieu of a Third Award of the Distinguished Flying Cross to Chief Warrant Officer Robert J. Filipowski, United States Army, for heroism while participating in aerial flight on 14 February 1971. Good overall condition.
