Summer 2023 Militaria & Collectibles Auction
Lot 250:
Spectacular Imperial German elaborate bullion embroidered official, decorative trestle table cover of the Bavarian Heavy Cavalry Rider Regiment Prince Carl of Bavaria, dated 1896. In April of 1944 the old Munich city hall was destroyed during a US bombing raid. Brought there for safe keeping, this important artifact was rescued but unfortunately did suffer some burn damage. In a show of defiance and resolve, the mayor of Munich, Karl Fiehler ordered a 40 inch x 26 inch Nazi flag to be sewn over the damaged portion of the cover in the center which does not affect the art embroidery or wording. This was acquired from a bunker below the old Munich city hall and brought home by a WWII US Army Captain. The Captain sold this piece to a well-known antique gun dealer, who subsequently resold it to an American collector in 1969. It has been in that collection for 54 years until its current offering.Further details: 81 inch x 119 inch black velveteen material with a 1 inch wide gold wire tape perimeter and 2 inch black and yellow/gold fringe. A 8 inch wide yellow-gold stripe with 1 inch wide gold wire borders creates a center panel covering the entire length. One end has a 9 inch x 7 1/4 inch black silk Iron Cross with a silver wire border. When placed on an approximately 27 inch wide trestle table both draped sides exhibit the magnificent art work embroidery. One side has a 20 1/2 inch x 27 inch relief gold bullion/multi-color Bavarian crowned coat-of-arms. Flanking the center piece in 4 1/2" embroidered yellow-gold letters is Vereinigung ehem. Kurassiere u. Schwerer Reiter – d. Rgts. Prinz Graf von Bayern Munchen. The opposite draped side has the same wording which encompasses a 17 1/2 inch x 16 inch colorful shield of the arms of the city of Munich – a lion, the twin tower gate and the Munchen Kidnl. All within oak leaf branches.
