Description
Large WWII – 1960s group to Lt. Col. Donald Altenburger. He served in the 9th AAF as a lead pilot in bombers in Europe during WWII, and then as a reservist after the war. Some info from his obituary is below:He joined the Army Air Corp in his senior year of high school. He received his flight training at Cape Girardeau, MO where he learned to fly an A26 medium bomber. From there he was stationed in England with the 356th Martin Marauders bomber group. While there he switched to flying a B26 bomber as the command pilot. After the war he married Daisy Beaird and lived in Penn Hills. He Joined the Air Force Reserves at Greater Pittsburgh’s 911th MAC base and Flew C119’s and then C124’s until he retired from the service in 1985 as a Lt. Colonel. During this time he worked at hall Laboratories which later would be Calgon Corp. until they were bought by Merck. He was a chemical Engineer that specialized in industrial water treatment.Group includes his 1968 dated flight suit (large stain on left leg) with Lt. Col. name tag, rank, and Military Airlift Command and 5,000 hours patches, which in the pocket was found a comb, ear protection, pocket notebook from 1969 with notes in it, and three unused sticks of Wrigleys Chewing Gum. Comes with a group of WWII – 1960s dog tags, rank insignia (some sterling) and name tag to him. The case itself is not included.
