Lot 163:
Description
WWII 9th Army Air Force P-51 fighter pilot group to First Lieutenant William M. Brackett, with his official original citation detailing his frequent reconnaissance flights over France and Germany despite intense Anti-Aircraft Fire, weather conditions, and adverse air attack. He would score two aerial enemy victories. He would fly 75 combat missions with 129 combat hours, and earn 12 Air Medals. Interestingly, Lt. Brackett looked very similar to the famous actor Clark Gable, and on one occasion was mobbed by autograph hunters, and an original newspaper article about this incident is included. Group includes his officially engraved Distinguished Flying Cross (with box), wrap brooch Air Medal (with box), and numbered Purple Heart (with box), as well as campaign medals, ribbons, sterling Captain bars and a set of AAF Officer’s collar brass. Comes with a very detailed set of copies of service records and medal citations. He was wounded in Nov. 1944.
