Description

Original James Forrestal, Navy Secretary signed condolence letter and envelope dated June 12, 1944 to Gunners Mate 1st Class, Frank Arnold Anderson, Massachusetts, Jan 7, 1944, Navy. He was awarded the Navy and Marine corps medal for heroically guarding the safety of his shipmates when the USS Augustine was sunk January 6, 1944 resulting in his own death. The President of the United States of America takes pride in presenting the Navy and Marine Corps Medal (Posthumously) to Gunner’s Mate First Class Frank Arnold Anderson (NSN: 4009418), United States Navy, for heroism during the sinking of the U.S.S. ST. AUGUSTINE (PG-54) on 6 January 1944. Gunner’s Mate First Class Anderson set all depth charges on safety while standing in water up to his waist without regard for his own personal safety, and thereby saving the lives of his shipmates, many of whom otherwise would have been lost by underwater explosion.
