Description

IWO JIMA WWII Group from Sgt. Martin C. Connor of Syracuse, NY, a veteran of HQ Co, 1st Bn., 26th Marines, 5th Marine Division who fought during the Iwo Jima Campaign and has a several hour long video interview available from the Veteran’s History Project. During the discussion, he spends most of it talking about his harrowing combat experiences during the famous battle on that island. We watched it, and can tell you that the detail he shares is rarely available to pair with a group like this! He was discharged in 1946 and came back into the service briefly as a drill instructor as Parris Island during the Korean War. He was notable after the war for helping vets return captured Japanese items (or in one case a skull) to families of the Soldiers there. He returned to Iwo Jima with other vets and met with former Japanese Soldiers there in 1970. He was inducted into the NY State Veterans Hall of Fame in 2017. Consignor personally obtained this material at his estate sale and includes the following: Lot includes several of his named uniforms, Combat worn fatigues in very salty condition with his name lightly written over the left pocket, and corporal rank stamped on the sleeves, Original M41 field jacket with hand done art and stenciling featuring Donald Duck as a 5th Marine Mortarman at Iwo Jima, captured Japanese post cards, medal, papers, documents, photos and papers from a 1970 reunion, and a very rare Japanese written book about the Battle of Iwo Jima hand signed by numerous USMC veterans, and more.
