Description

Small WWII paper / photo group from Brigadier General Robert Alexis McClure (1897–1973), the U.S. Army officer best known as the “father of U.S. Army psychological warfare.” Commissioned after graduating from West Point in 1917, he served with the infantry in World War I. Between the wars, McClure held a variety of infantry and staff assignments, gaining experience in both command and training roles. During WWII, he rose to prominence as an innovator in information and psychological operations. Serving in North Africa and Europe, he organized and directed Allied psychological warfare efforts, including leaflet drops, radio broadcasts, and propaganda campaigns that undermined enemy morale. He played a key role in developing the Psychological Warfare Division at Allied Force Headquarters and later under SHAEF during the campaigns in Italy and Northwestern Europe. After the war, McClure remained an influential figure in shaping Cold War information strategy. He became the first chief of the U.S. Army’s Psychological Warfare Division and helped establish the Army’s Special Forces at Fort Bragg in the early 1950s. He retired from active duty in 1956 with the rank of Major General.
