WWII 9th Air Force Killed In Action KIA Purple Heart Document. Flight Officer 1st Lieutenant Virgil W. Anderson (March 19, 1923-December 27, 1944) was attached to the 440th Troop Carrier Group, 95th Troop Carrier Squadron, Ninth Air Force. From the internet: Anderson was born on March 19th 1923 in Alta, lowa. He enlisted in the Army Air Force in February 1942 and earned his wing in May 1944. Assigned to the 440th TCG / 95th TCS. He took part to the operation Market Garden as co-pilot with the C-47 42-100906 nickamed Dabo. He was later involved in the operation Repulse, dropping supplies to the 101st Airborne Division. His plane was shot down on December 27th 1944 near Bastogne and Anderson was not able to bail out. He was killed in action with his pilot and crew chief. The navigator and radio operator were POW. Anderson is buried in Buena Vista County lowa since1949. He was awarded the Air Medal 2 times (the second was posthumously and the Purple Heart. Overall, good condition for its age even though the piece is curled. This is for the document only. We do not have the Purple Heart.
