Description
A real piece of Pacific Theater Naval History! Size 33.5 x 57. WWII 48 Star USN and USS Maury 401 marked cotton flag used on the Gridley-class destroyer USS Maury DD-401 (1938-1945). Though stationed at Pearl Harbor, the Maury managed to avoid the December 7th attack as she was with the USS Enterprise. She participated in 16 battles in the Pacific Theater, including the Battle of the Coral Sea, Midway, Guadalcanal and Saipan. This was part of the Dr. Clarence Rungee collection, a noted vexillologist who collected naval flags from US ships prior to being destroyed. This is one of two known USS Maury flags from that collection, the other being slightly larger. This is not the same very large flag shown in the ship photo, and being smaller was likely for another purpose aboard the ship. The flag shows staining in various areas.
