Description

Lot of four original black and white Noel Sickles painting prints of Tanks for use by LIFE magazines. By 1940, Scorchy Smiths Noel Sickles had abandoned the comics field to forge into freelance illustration. The ease with which he drew, and the scope and variety of his abilities, were formidable. As World War II approached, Sickles knowledge of military hardware led to commissions from Life magazine to portray events to which the camera was not privy. Sickles was also hired by the Identification & Characteristics Section of Naval Intelligence. His illustrations for Newsmap, a joint Army-Navy venture, were adventuresome and bold, enormously detailed and drawn without human models, under deadlines.
